Tuppers’ Hop Pocket Pils
“Tuppers’ Hop Pocket Pils was ranked by Michael Jackson as one of
the top 10 beers in the U.S. in the July 2002 issue of American Heritage. It is based on the keller or cellar
style. This style combines the
appetizing bitterness of a pilsner with the easy to drink smoothness of an
unfiltered beer. Many years ago,
Northern Bavarian German breweries aged their beers in “killers” or cellars
that were usually caves dug into the side of a hill. Tuppers’ Hop Pocket Pils is made via a complex hopping
schedule which includes dry hopping for weeks over whole-leaf Saaz and Mt. Hood
hops. We also use Saaz,
Mittelfruh, Saplt and Mt. Hood in the kettle. The beer is bottled and keg conditioned which provides very
fine carbonation and a dense head.
The Pils was a GABF gold medal winner in the German Pilsner category in
2001. Available in kegs and
bottles. Alcohol by volume: 5.0%.”

「タッパーズ・ヒップ・ポケット」は、「ドミニオン」で有名なオールド・ドミニオン醸造会社で委託生産されているビールだ。但し、委託元のタッパーズ・ヒップ・ポケット醸造会社はメリーランド州ベセスダにある。従って、実のところは、メリーランド・ビールと呼ぶべきなのだろう。このビールの評価コメントをご覧いただけるとわかる通り、予想以上に美味しいビールである。比較的ボクの好みの部類に入るビールである。
オールド・ドミニオン醸造会社のビールといったら、一般的には少し苦味がきついものが多い（それが「ドミニオン」の高い評価に繋がっている）。でも、ボクは未だビール道の未熟者だから、苦ければ美味しいとはとても思えないでいる。やっぱり、軽く一杯の気持ちで飲めるピルゼンが好きなのだ。そんなビールを同社が生産していたということ自体が驚きだ。
